New U.S. Manufacturing Operations Announced in June 2023

The month of June brought an exciting roster of new manufacturing operations. From billions poured into the EV industry to multiple new facilities announced in building materials, solar, food production and biotech, the U.S. industrial sector continues to defy expectations and post strong growth even amid an uncertain economy.

New Manufacturing Operations Announced in June 2023

Spanning eleven U.S. states and representing billions in investment, today we're exploring some of the most exciting new manufacturing operations announced in June. First up, June was a big month for the EV industry with five major projects announced across the nation.

BMW Group Breaks Ground on New High-Voltage Battery Assembly Plant in South Carolina

In a major announcement made June 28th, BMW Group broke ground on a new high-voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff, South Carolina. The facility, named “Plant Woodruff,” will produce sixth-generation batteries to supply fully electric vehicles at nearby BMW Manufacturing in Spartanburg. The new plant is part of a $1.7 billion investment in its U.S. operations and will create more than 300 jobs onsite with the opportunity to grow.

Ilka Horstmeier, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Human Resources and Real Estate, said: “We're making the BMW Group electric. Our new battery assembly plant in Woodruff will soon play an important role in our electric future here in the USA. Through the Woodruff plant, we expand our footprint in the state of South Carolina."

SK Signet Celebrates Grand Opening of EV Charger Manufacturing Facility

Meanwhile, in Texas, SK Signet celebrated the grand opening of its EV charger manufacturing facility in Plano, Texas. The facility will expand U.S.-based manufacturing and R&D for cutting-edge electric vehicle charging equipment to support the growth of America's EV infrastructure. At full capacity, the facility will be able to produce more than 10,000 ultra-fast chargers per year and is expected to create up to 183 jobs by 2026. SK Signet CEO Jung Ho Shin said "The opening of the SK Signet factory means new jobs for Texas and more chargers for American EV owners. We couldn't have accomplished this without the close partnership of the State of Texas and the City of Plano."

$3 Billion EV Battery Plant Headed to Indiana

And in Indiana, Governor Eric J. Holcomb announced plans to bring a more than $3 billion EV battery cell plant to St. Joseph County, creating 1,700 manufacturing jobs. The new battery cell plant, a joint venture between Michigan-based General Motors and Korea-based Samsung SDI, is scheduled to begin operations in 2026. The facility will house production lines to build nickel-rich prismatic and cylindrical cells and is expected to help significantly increase the accessibility and affordability of EVs. Once complete, the plant will have more than 30 GWh of capacity. Mary Barra, GM Chair and CEO, said “This joint venture and the 1,700 people there will help supply cells for millions of all-electric vehicles for customers across North America.”

NVH Korea to Establish New EV Parts Facility in Georgia

Heading over to Georgia, automotive parts manufacturer NVH Korea will establish a new facility in Locust Grove, Henry County, creating over 160 new jobs and bringing $72 million in investment. The new facility will supply battery parts for electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States for manufacturers such as Hyundai Mobis, Kia Georgia, and Hyundai Motor Group. Ja Kyum Koo, Chairman and CEO of NVH Korea, said “It is the first step of our company’s effort to contribute to the electrification of the mobility industry, and we look forward to joining the community of Locust Grove and Henry County.”

Woory Industrial to Establish First US Manufacturing Facility

Also in Georgia, Woory Industrial Co., Ltd., an automotive parts manufacturer, will establish a new manufacturing facility in Dublin, Georgia. The facility will create more than 130 new jobs and an estimated $18 million in investment in Dublin-Laurens County. The new facility, located at 404 Kellam Road in Dublin, will be the company’s first U.S. manufacturing location and will produce electrical heaters, control units, and actuators for EV and internal combustion carmakers in North America. Jungwoo Kim, CEO of Woory Industrial Company, said “Georgia will be a good opportunity for Woory to take another step forward as part of the vanguard of EV development. We are confident that our experience and technology will contribute to the prosperity of the community.”

And with all of these EV plants springing up, new suppliers were announced as well in the month of June. Which brings us to:
