New U.S. Manufacturing Companies Announced in July

Now that the U.S. manufacturing sector is beginning to emerge from the long shutdown period brought on by the pandemic, the headlines are filled with better news for the sector, including a sharp rebound in manufacturing activity and increased hiring.

New plant announcements and news of expansion have accompanied the recovery and have dominated manufacturing headlines in July. In fact, from the looks of all the new manufacturing plant openings and expansions announced this month, you’d think July was the new January. Some new and expanded operations are focused on high-demand pandemic-related items such as PPE or pharmaceuticals, while others run the gambit from electric vehicles; flooring; lumber; plastic injection molding; snack foods and aviation.

This post will explore the many new plants and expansions announced in July on a state-by-state basis. Encompassing 20 states, these are the major new or expanded manufacturing operations announced in July.

Alabama

First up, Revere Plastic Systems announced plans to establish a new facility in Auburn, which will be the company’s first endeavor in the U.S. Southeast.

Revere, which makes plastic injection molded parts and assemblies, plans to hire 120 once operational.

Alabama’s industrial sector has seen significant growth in the past decade, particularly in transportation equipment. The state is home to some major automakers, including Honda; Mercedes Benz and Hyundai Motors. Arizona

Big news this month for the state of Arizona, with up-and-coming electric vehicle manufacturer Nikola unveiling plans to establish a major $600 million manufacturing plant in the state for the production of the company’s semi-trucks, the Nikola Tre and Nikola Two.

Once complete, the new facility will occupy one million square feet once complete and represents a major accomplishment for the company.

Says Trevor Milton, Founder and Executive Chairman of Nikola, “It has been an incredible journey for Nikola Corporation. We started in our basement six years ago and now we are starting this one million square foot manufacturing plant.”

Arkansas

The state of Arkansas received some welcome news this month when SCA Pharma announced plans to expand its Little Rock production facility.

The new expansion represents an investment of $10 million and will double its Little Rock workforce of 180. SCA Pharma is a manufacturer of compounded pharmaceuticals, with a second location in Windsor, Connecticut, also slated to expand.

California

The COVID-19 pandemic has created new demand for personal protective equipment (PPE), with several manufacturer retooling to produce the critical equipment or establishing entirely new operations.

MaxCare Products is one of these companies, having recently established a new operation in Santa Ana, where it will produce masks, PPE, and other medical supplies.

Connecticut

As mentioned above, SCA Pharma announced plans to expand its pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Windsor, Connecticut, increasing the size of the plant to 150,000 square feet or by about 40%.

Georgia

Great news for the Peach State this month when Creative Flooring Solutions announced it would be establishing a new $70 million laminate, wood and vinyl tile plant in Calhoun.

The new facility will occupy 250,000 square feet and create 300 jobs. The company also plans to tack on another 250,000 square feet to the facility in the coming years.

Meanwhile, Portland, Oregon-based Wellmade Flooring announced that it will expand into the state of Georgia, adding a new facility in Bartow County, bringing 240 jobs to the region.

Last, but not least, snack giant Frito-Lay announced plans to expand its Georgia operations, investing $200 million at its plant in Perry. The facility will add 120 new jobs and will accommodate expanded production of tortilla chip products and Baked Cheetos Puffs.

Illinois

Huntsman, a manufacturer of adhesives, coatings and thermoplastic resins and films, announced this month that it has expanded its capacity, opening a new building at its site in Ringwood, Illinois.

Kansas

The state of Kansas received some welcome news this month when AgEagle Aerial Systems announced plans to expand into the city of Wichita. The company will be locating a new manufacturing plant in the Wichita, citing the city’s “world-class engineering and aeronautical talent pool,” among the reason for its decision.

AgEagle makes unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and also provides aerial imagery, data collection and analytics.

Kansas is a major hub for transportation equipment companies, with 20% of the state’s manufacturers involved in some type of transportation equipment manufacturing – mostly aviation. Kentucky

In Kentucky this month, GE Appliances announced it would be expanding production at its facility in Louisville, adding on 260 new jobs and representing an investment of $62 million.

The expansion will help the company produce more appliances like washers, dryers, dishwashers and refrigerators.

Massachusetts

Biotech company Cytiva has completed the expansion of its contract biomanufacturing facility in Marlboro, Massachusetts. The upgraded facility now encompasses 60,000 square feet.

Michigan

Meanwhile, in Michigan, Grand River Aseptic Manufacturing (GRAM) announced that it has completed expansion of its facility there. The expanded facility now occupies 100,000 square feet where it will focus on increased demand for aseptic fill/finish market.

Also in Michigan, auto supplier Magna Seating announced a major expansion of its Highland Park facility, representing an investment of $35.4 million and bringing 480 jobs to the region.

The Argus Press reported this month that Feighner Boat Lifts and Docks broke ground on a new plant in Woodhull Township. This is the company’s second U.S. facility, with another location in Charlotte.

Michigan is among the nation’s top manufacturing states, home to the Big Three automakers and hundreds of suppliers. In fact, 21% of the state’s manufacturers are involved in some sort of transportation equipment manufacturing.

Missouri

In Missouri this month, Bolder Industries announced that it has begun construction on a new manufacturing facility in Maryville. The new plant, which will occupy 17,000 square feet will recycle scrap tires, converting the materials into carbon black and petroleum.

Montana

The state of Montana received some good news this month with the opening of SmartLam in Columbia Falls.

SmartLam is a cross-laminated manufacturer and is taking up residence in a facility idled by Plum Creek Timber and Weyerhaeuser. SmartLam has created 40 new jobs at the new mill.

New Jersey

500 new jobs are now expected in the city of Allendale, New Jersey now that Hitachi Chemical Advanced Therapeutics Solutions, LLC has opened its new cell and gene therapy manufacturing plant.

The new facility will focus on research, development and manufacturing of commercial cell and gene therapy products.

Ohio

The Vindicator in Youngstown, Ohio announced this month that Primetals Technologies would be expanding to Warren, Ohio, moving some of its manufacturing operations from an exiting facility in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The company manufactures and refurbishes rolling mill components for steel mills. This new facility will position the company closer to steel plants in the region.

Ohio is a powerful manufacturing state, home to a large and diverse set of companies including GE Aviation Systems, AK Steel Corp and Fiat Chrysler.

Oklahoma

The next three facilities couldn’t come soon enough for the Sooner State. Safety IMMI finally opened its latest manufacturing facility in Tulsa just last week. The new plant will manufacture lap/shoulder belts and child seats for school buses, employing 30.

Meanwhile, machinery manufacturer Muncie Power Products broke ground on a new plant in north Tulsa. It is the first plant to break ground in the city’s brand-new Peoria-Mohawk.

The plant is expected to be complete and ready for business in 2021.

In addition, Skydweller Aero Inc., announced plans to establish its U.S. headquarters in Oklahoma City and its 55,000 square-feet testing and manufacturing arm at the Ardmore Industrial Park.

Skydweller Aero is a U.S.-Spanish aerospace company, headquartered in Madrid, Spain.

Texas

Tesla seems to be behind many of the more exciting manufacturing announcements, and this month they did not disappoint. The company has chosen Austin, TX for its fourth Gigafactory.

Tesla’s Gigafactories are no less than huge, hence their name, and this facility is no exception, representing $1 billion in investment, with plans to hire 5,000 workers. Employees there will assemble the Tesla Cybertruck; Tesla Semi and Model 3 and Y.

Meanwhile, the Lone Star State got a little extra pick-me-up when Coffee Tech Industries announced plans to establish a large factory in Seguin, where they will manufacture instant coffee, contracting with major brands like Starbucks and Peet’s.

The new facility will employ 91 and occupy 112,000 square feet.

Also, contract manufacturer Special Products & Mfg., Inc. unveiled plans to establish a second Texas facility in the town of Round Rock, adding up to 30 employees over the next few years.

Additionally, electric vehicle manufacturer AYRO announced its has expanded its facility in Round Rock, adding an additional 24,000 square-foot building to its site.

And in Houston, Maker Therapeutics, Inc., a clinical-stage immuno-oncology company that produces T cell-based therapies announced plans to establish a new manufacturing facility in the city, expected to break ground in 2021.

The new plant will occupy 48,500 feet.

Tennessee

Clarksville, Tennessee made the news this month when automotive battery manufacturer AtlasBX announced construction of its brand new facility in the city was nearing completion.

Sister plant to nearby Hankook Tire, the new 210,000 square-foot will employ 190 workers once operational.

Meanwhile, poultry breeding company Aviagen announced plans to establish a feed processing facility in Pikeville. The new plant will produce 2,400 tons of poultry feed per month and represents an investment of $35.3 million.

Virginia

The state of Virginia welcomed the news this month that Acoustical Sheetmetal Company plans to expand its facility in Virginia Beach. The company, which makes enclosures for power generation equipment, is investing $15.8 million for the project and will add another 100,000 square foot building to its existing site in the city.

Meanwhile, in Lynchburg, eye health company Bausch & Lomb announced plans to expand its contact lens products plant, adding 79 new jobs over the next five years and expanding its existing site to 190,000 square feet. The company cited increasing demand for eyecare products as the reason for the expansion.

Washington

This month Selkirk Pharma announced they would be breaking ground on their new facility in Spokane’s West Plains area as soon as August 2020. The plant will be double the size than initially proposed, when first announced in September. Selkirk is an injectable drug and packaging manufacturer. Once operational, the facility will employ 100 initially, but will eventually employ 300.
