U.S. manufacturers are starting out 2022 with a bang, unveiling multiple new operations across seven states. This month, we saw several companies in the building materials industry break ground, while a new announcement by Intel is poised to help secure the semiconductor supply chain for years to come.
Let's explore the new U.S. manufacturing companies announced this month.
First up, the state of Ohio and the semiconductor industry got a big boost this month, with Intel Corporation announcing it has chosen the state for locate its most advanced semiconductor manufacturing facilities. With plans to invest more than $20 billion to build two plants by 2025 to support its advanced manufacturing processes, the project will stand as the largest private sector company investments in Ohio’s history.
Said Pat Gelsinger, Intel CEO: “We are excited to call Ohio home to Intel’s first new manufacturing site in 40 years. Today, we take an important step toward our goal to rebalance global chipmaking capacity and help boost production to meet the surging demand for advanced semiconductors, powering a new generation of innovative products.”

In Idaho, Morton Buildings celebrated a groundbreaking of its new facility in Pocatello. The new, 67,428 square foot facility will begin operations in the third quarter of 2022, according to the company’s press release.
“We’re very excited to establish the new Pocatello plant to meet current as well as future capacity needs, including those for farm, suburban, equestrian and commercial buildings,” said Sean Cain, Morton Buildings president.
Morton Building is a 100% employee-owned company and specializes in post-frame manufacturing and contraction. This is its seventh U.S. manufacturing plant.
Meanwhile, in South Carolina, metal building system manufacturer Chief Buildings announced plans to locate a new facility in Lancaster County. Representing an investment of $22.1 million, the new plant will create 102 jobs over the next five years. Chief Buildings was founded in 1966 and creates low-rise, non-residential metal building systems, utilizing custom-engineered steel solutions.
DJ Eihusen, President and CEO of Chief Industries said “Lancaster was the ideal location to expand our operations. The expansion is a logical step in our business growth strategy and helps to ensure we meet the needs of our stakeholders.”
And in North Carolina, window manufacturer JELD-WEN held a grand opening celebration this month for its new facility in Statesville that it announced in May and opened in July of 2021. The location added a second shift this month, adding another 20 jobs. Already employing more than 500 workers in the state of North Carolina, this new facility has committed to creating at least 235 positions over the next five year.
In Pennsylvania, AES Clean Technology announced plans this month to establish a new facility in Manheim Borough in Lancaster County. AES designs and manufactures cleanroom facilities and plans to invest $14.2 million to open the new plant, hiring 97 and retaining the 95 employees at its current headquarters in Montgomery County.
“We are proud to expand upon our 35-year presence in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as we continue the mission of helping our pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients save lives through the therapies that they manufacture inside our cleanroom facilities,” said Grant Merrill, CEO of AES Clean Technology in a statement.
In another win for Pennsylvania, industrial filtration company Imperial Systems, Inc. announced in mid-January that it has acquired a new facility in Mercer, PA, which it will use to expand manufacturing of its cartridge filters for industrial dust collection equipment.
Imperial System’s new facility was formerly occupied by heating and cooling equipment manufacturer Reznor.
Said Jeremiah Wann, President and CEO of Imperial Systems: “We are very excited about the acquisition and renovation of the former Reznor heater factory. This will bring new life to Mercer County and offer the people of Mercer and the surrounding areas an opportunity to work for a world class company with the best wages and benefits.

On January 20th, ExxonMobil and SABIC announced their startup of Gulf Coast Growth Ventures in San Patricio County, Texas. The new chemical plant will produce materials used in packaging, agricultural film, construction materials, clothing, and automotive coolants.
“We built this state-of-the-art chemical plant ahead of schedule and below budget, by leveraging our global projects expertise in execution planning and delivery, while keeping everyone safe and healthy,” said Karen McKee, president of ExxonMobil Chemical Company.
The new facility will include a 1.8 million metric ton per year ethane steam cracker, as well as two polyethylene units and a monoethylene glycol unit.

Meanwhile, in Missouri, food manufacturer 8th Avenue Food & Provisions officially opened its new snack nut and dried fruit manufacturing facility in Hazelwood, relocating a facility from British Columbia to the St. Louis area.
The new, 250,000 square-foot facility will bring more than 300 jobs to the area. The site will be used to prep and package snack nuts, trail mixes and dried fruit.
Said Julie Burns, General Manager of Healthy Snacks, 8th Avenue, “We’re excited and proud to bring employment opportunities for 300-plus workers to the St. Louis region where they can join a new plant and help build a great workplace culture.”
