Manufacturers continued to add jobs at a faster rate in October, with the industrial sector among the top three industries for job growth, according to the latest jobs report from the U.S. Department of Labor issued November 4th.
In October, U.S. manufacturers added 32,000 jobs, running ahead of the 22,000 new positions the sector added in September. The Labor Department reports manufacturers have added jobs at a faster rate in 2022 compared to 2021, with employment increasing by 37,000 jobs per month on average this year, compared to 30,000 per month in 2021. Meanwhile, the economy added 261,000 jobs overall in October, and the unemployment rate edged up to 3.7%.
Meanwhile, the latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover survey finds the number of job openings in manufacturing remains elevated, with the Labor Department recording 810,000 unfilled positions for the sector in September (September JOLTS data is reported in November).

Today, we’re exploring the most recent manufacturing numbers from the Labor Department, providing the gains and losses by specific subsector, as well as the latest in manufacturing job openings.
In October, manufacturing job gains were largely led by the durable goods sector, which increased by 23,000 jobs. Non-durable goods added another 9,000 jobs.
Gains in durable goods were led by computer and electronic products and fabricated metals, which added 5,400 and 5,200 jobs, respectively. Transportation equipment continues to add jobs, with employment in that sector advancing by 5,400 positions in October.
Other sectors adding jobs included nonmetallic mineral products (+3,200); machinery (+3,000) and semiconductors (+2,400)
On the non-durable durable goods side, job gains were led by the plastics/rubber sector, which gained 3,000 jobs. Miscellaneous non-durable goods manufacturing added another 2,100 jobs and the chemicals industry gained 1,600 workers.
Manufacturing job losses in October were minimal and included wood products, down by 900 jobs and textile mills, down 700 jobs. Marginal losses were also reported in electronic instruments (-300) and petroleum/coal products (-100).
