Fastest-Growing Truck and Trailer Manufacturers

Posted by IndustrySelect on Tuesday, August 20, 2019

Trucks are the backbone of our nation. At some point, nearly all products and materials travel by a truck of some type. And, as the overall economy grows, so does the market for those vehicles.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, there were more than 151 million registered trucks as of 2017. Of those, 2.7 million were tractor trailers.

Improvements to the Fleet

Truck and tractor trailer manufacturers recently began to focus on better fuel economy, reduced emissions and higher reliability. Improving those factors reduces operating costs, which in turn increases profit margins.

One way that is done is by improving aerodynamics, such as adding fairings known as skirts and boattails to tractor trailers to reduce aerodynamic drag and help trucks burn less fuel.

Research into self-driving trucks continues, but the software and hardware required to make them happen at a price point that makes sense to operators is still several years off.

Another potential cost-saver, electric propulsion is nearing the point at which it will soon be available to the general market.

Ford's EV F-150 prototype attracted attention recently by pulling 1.25 million pounds of loaded railroad cars, proving that the technology will be able to match or exceed current performance standards.
